When you connect both Joy-Con controllers with the Joy-Con grip, you can use them like a traditional controller. Without the grip, both can be used independently as two separate controllers. The infrared motion camera of the Joy-Con (R) detects shapes, movements, and the distance of objects that the camera sees.
