These sleep headphones consist of 30 francs worth of e-scrap and a piece of fleece
by Kevin Hofer
A start-up called Ozlo is bringing back the Sleepbuds. In the new edition, the in-ear headphones not only provide sounds to help you fall asleep, but also play everything.
The Sleepbuds from Bose were not a success. The first generation was from the market due to battery problems. The Sleepbuds II disappeared without further explanation. Yet for many people, an acoustic accompaniment is important when falling asleep, as Kevin's search for sleep headphones shows.
Three former Bose employees continue to believe in the Sleepbuds and are launching a new generation on the market with their start-up. To this end, they have licensed technologies from Bose and are expanding the range of functions of the headphones. Snoring partners, city noises or partying neighbours should no longer disturb your sleep with them.
In addition to passive noise cancellation - what earplugs do - the previous Sleepbuds tried to put you to sleep with specially composed music and relaxing soundscapes. They were not real headphones. This changes with the new Sleepbuds from Ozlo. You can select any Bluetooth device as the playback source and let your own sleep playlist, podcast or radio play lull you to sleep.
In addition, the third-generation Sleepbuds have an alarm clock that only you can hear. After getting up, you can also see how you slept, as with many fitness trackers. With the help of sensors, the headphones not only recognise when you fall asleep.
Silicone wings also ensure that the Sleepbuds don't slip out of your ear while you sleep. The manufacturer also promises that the in-ears fit comfortably and do not pinch during the night.
The new Sleepbuds can currently be pre-ordered at Kickstarter. For the EU, they cost 273 or 291 euros depending on the support level, making them even more expensive than the previous Sleepbuds from Bose. Delivery is planned for December 2023.
However, in his search Kevin found suitable headphones for falling asleep that only cost around a tenth of the new Sleepbuds.
