Spotify, Huawei, lock screen: a little trick for your comfort

Spotify is not compatible with the Huawei lock screen. The trick is there, but it is well hidden and not very intuitive.

I don't like Huawei's Emui user interface. Maybe you do. Can we agree that the Spotify controls on the lock screen are really bad?
.
For those who don't know: when using Spotify on the lock screen you usually have options to pause playback or jump from one song to another.

By default, Emui looks like this when you unlock the phone using facial recognition.
.

It is useless, even if you don't see the lock screen often, because face unlock works very quickly on Huawei devices. However, there is a solution. This way you can simply change the song if you have the phone next to you on the table or if you don't want to take it out of your pocket.

The trick is there, but it is well hidden

If you thought you'd find the setting somewhere in the app's permissions, you're wrong! Spotify's permissions are not the problem, but rather facial recognition itself. Again, the issue is not clear.
.
Let's keep it short:

  • Go to 'Settings'.
  • Search "Face", only one option remains.
  • Press on 'Face Unlock' and enter your PIN.
  • The option you are looking for is called "Show Notifications" and the description is as follows: "Only show the content of lock screen notifications when your face is recognised". So the content of lock screen notifications should only be shown when your face is recognised.
  • Disable.
  • Finished.

A bit of privacy: anonymising notifications

This leads to another problem: for example, WhatsApp notifications are displayed together with the message text. You don't want that, because you need your privacy even when you turn on the screen. But there is a solution for that too.

  • Go to 'Settings' .
  • Select "Notifications"
  • Press "Lock Screen Notifications"
  • Select the "Show, but hide contents" option.

The result: Spotify is displayed cleanly, widget and all - and WhatsApp remains private.
.
Finished. On older versions of Emui this was much more complex. But on 9.1 the font trick no longer works. I am open to suggestions.
