Google Whitechapel confirmed: will the Pixel 2021 feature Google's own SoC?
by Dominik Bärlocher
The Google Pixel finally has a launch date. The new Android flagship is coming on 19 October.
Google has finally announced the launch date for the new Google Pixel 6. The official Pixel Event website doesn’t say much, but it does give you all the information you need: Tuesday, 19 October 2021, 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. That’s 7 p.m. in Switzerland.
The Google Pixel 6 is new in many ways. From the front, the device looks like a standard rectangle with rounded corners. But the camera on the back of the phone is new and exciting.
The Pixel 6 will also run on Google’s first proprietary chip. The chip, which was initially announced as «Google Whitechapel», is officially called «Tensor» and is supposed to compete with the Apple A series. The concept is clear: proprietary software should be accompanied by proprietary hardware. The Google Pixel 6 is supposed to show what Android is and all it’s capable of – a flagship phone not just in terms of hardware, but also software.
The Google Pixel 6 will be available in two versions:
With that, the tech giant is changing its naming scheme, dropping the «XL» for «Pro». Perhaps this is because the name of the new phone would be quite a mouthful with the old naming scheme – «Google Pixel Six Ex Ell», or «Google Pixel Sixel» for short. Or maybe Google has made the change simply because the suffix «Pro» has become the industry standard.
Google will officially launch the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro in the following countries only:
However, this doesn’t mean that the Pixel 6 phones won’t be available in Switzerland or Austria. Historically speaking, grey imports are easy to do. Alternatively, it’s quite possible that Google will announce a second launch wave and expand its official markets.
