«Rohformat» : a short documentary about Peter Lindbergh
by Thomas Kunz
«Rohformat» is German for raw format and the name of our new photography series. Watch filmmaker Armin Tobler and photographer Thomas Kunz dive into the world of legendary and quirky photographers. For this pilot project, Thomas decided to take a closer look at a photographer who’s fascinated him for quite some time now: Peter Lindbergh.
The digitec «Rohformat» project came about when Thomas Kunz was reflecting on his style of photography. In the last three years, he's done hundreds of jobs for Digitec Galaxus, but hasn't really managed to develop a consistent, recognisable style. To counteract this, Thomas and Armin Tobler set out to follow the footsteps of photographers with a unique style. Together, they dived into the world of legendary and quirky photographers.
For the first «Rohformat» series, Thomas chose to focus on Peter Lindbergh, a photographer with a very distinctive style and someone who’s fascinated him for a long time. Peter Lindbergh was a German photographer who specialised in portrait and fashion photography and worked with famous models such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista during his career. Lindbergh's photographs are mostly in black and white and characterised by a powerful interplay of light and shadow. Lindbergh's photographs emphasise the natural beauty of models, showing their imperfections and wrinkles.
Thomas Kunz set out to unveil the secret of Peter Lindbergh's style. He talked to people who worked with him, experimented with the same equipment and created in-depth photo analyses. The result? Four episodes, three tutorials and four pictures, which you can see here:
