AMD is presenting two new graphics cards at Gamescom: the high-end model Radeon RX 7800 XT and the mid-range model Radeon RX 7700 XT. The leap in raw performance is particularly large for the smaller model.
AMD is showcasing two new graphics cards at Gamescom 2023: the high-end model Radeon RX 7800 XT and the mid-range model Radeon RX 7700 XT. The leap in raw performance is particularly large for the smaller model.
The Radeon RX 7800 XT should be ten per cent faster than its predecessor RX 6800 XT, according to the specs. The Radeon RX 7700 XT is a different story. Here, the specs are significantly better compared to its predecessor, the RX 6700 XT. A double-digit increase in performance can be expected. Both cards support DisplayPort 2.1.
Here are the two cards and their specs compared to the predecessor models:

Of course, raw FPS performance is only one side of the coin. The new 7800 XT has a 37 watt lower TDP than its predecessor. The performance per watt should therefore increase significantly. With the 7700 XT, on the other hand, the jump in performance per watt should be relativised. The TDP of the 7700 XT is 15 watts higher than the 6700 XT. Of course, this is just speculation and the first reviews will show in which direction things are heading.
According to AMD, the RX 7800 XT should deliver 3.5 per cent more FPS in 1440p resolution than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070, while the RX 7700 XT delivers an average of 12 per cent more than the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB. Of course, the manufacturer's figures should be treated with caution.
The two cards will go on sale on 6 September. The price for Switzerland is not yet known.
Furthermore, AMD's Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions Frank Azor has confirmed that FSR 3 is coming soon. This is an upscaling technology and the successor to FSR 2. Using the example of "Forspoken", AMD shows an increase in FPS by a factor of 3.4. AMD has not given an exact date for the launch of FSR 3, but it is expected to start in early autumn. That would be in a few weeks. Twelve titles are expected to support the technology at launch, including "Cyberpunk 2077". FSR 3 should be compatible with all graphics cards, including those from the competition.
Update 28 August 2023: According to Scott Herkleman, Senior Vice President and General Manager Graphics Business Unit at AMD, the lineup of the Radeon 7000 series is complete with the two new cards. This means that, apart from slightly modified versions of the existing cards, AMD will not be releasing new GPUs until the Radeon 8000 series.
