Monitors for meetings: what to look out for

These days, choosing monitors and TV screens can be overwhelming. This article will help you find a monitor solution tailored to your needs.
Whether it's a classic TV, signage display, interactive screen or projector – an adequate monitor is part of every company's infrastructure today. They play an important role in quite a few places. Obviously, they're required equipment in meeting and conference rooms. But even in other areas, such as the design of a hotel lobby or a trade show appearance, you can't avoid getting a solid monitor.
Starting it off well
There are several aspects to consider when choosing the right display. First and foremost, you'll have to ask yourself whether classic monitor functions will suffice or whether you want to work interactively on a single screen. In addition, you should consider whether the monitor will only run for a few hours a day, as in a boardroom, or whether it will be used continuously, as in a hotel lobby. In addition, lighting conditions, the size of the room and audience as well as the requirements regarding screen resolution are relevant. Here's a helpful chart:
Amount of viewers | Diagonal screen size in inches | Diagonal screen size in centimetres | |
---|---|---|---|
Small room | Up to 6 people | 55-65’’ | 139.7-165.1 cm |
Medium room | Up to 12 people | 75’’ | 190.5 cm |
Large room | 12 or more people | 85’’ or more | 215.6 cm or more |
A rule of thumb regarding distance: 4.5 x diagonal > distance to monitor > 1.5 x diagonal
The often underestimated TV screen
Although classic TV sets are designed for home use, they're also frequently used in business environments for budget reasons. Here at digitec Galaxus AG, we also rely on classic TV screens in low-frequency meeting rooms. When purchasing, be sure to pay attention to the TV's technology. LCD and related QLED technology are best designed for use in bright rooms and have a low risk of burn-in. OLED technology isn't recommended for bright meeting rooms due to the comparatively higher risk of burn-in and the lower light intensity. Three classic TVs that are particularly popular with our corporate customers can be found here:
A signage display for high performance
Signage displays are generally more expensive than conventional TVs. However, the higher price is justified by some features that might also be relevant for you. Particularly high light output and resolutions ensure that you can also share small Excel documents in particularly bright rooms – without squinting your eyes if you're in the back. Furthermore, signage displays offer extensive burn-in protection, making them ideal for 24/7 use in hotel lobbies and storefronts. You also don't get the touch and multi-screen functions that some signage displays come with on normal TVs. In addition, Signature Displays offer a figurative cornucopia of connectivity options – such as VGA, LAN, DVI or USB.

Interactive screens for maximum collaboration
Want to make your meetings more interactive, productive and creative? Then an interactive screen could be the optimal solution for you. After all, touch screens make the tedious process of photographing and sending flip charts a thing of the past. Many interactive screens also offer you the integrated option of mirroring content from a wide variety of devices such as laptops or cell phones directly onto the monitor via wireless technology. An additional solution for image transmission is therefore unnecessary. Below you'll find the bestsellers among interactive screens:
The underdog: projectors
Projectors have always been very popular in the professional environment and are therefore often favoured. This is mainly because projectors were the only solution for large format images for quite a while. In the meantime, however, we also have TVs with a screen diagonal of up to 98 inches, which corresponds to about 250 centimetres. The prices of such high-quality TVs are currently still in the range of a new car. However, the innovative and fiercely competitive market is ensuring that the «diagonal/price» ratio falls steadily. Consequently, it's only a matter of time until screens with more than 100 inches will be ready for the mass market. Back to projectors, back to the present: purchasing a projector makes sense, especially when either a mobile solution or the largest possible image for the least amount of money is sought.
