Apple WWDC on 10 June – what to expect
by Samuel Buchmann
In the EU, you can now install apps directly from developers' websites with iOS 17.5. The new anti-stalking function is available everywhere.
Apple has released the iOS 17.5 update for download. It is the last major update before the WWDC developer conference on 10 June. iOS 18, including many AI announcements, is expected to be presented at this event. However, the new operating system is not expected to be released until autumn. Until then, it's worth taking a look at the latest innovations.
With iOS 17.5, Apple continues to bow to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). After installing the update, you no longer have to install apps from the App Store in the EU. You can obtain them directly from the websites of the respective developers.
However, there are some requirements from Apple that are intended to protect against malicious apps. For example, developers must be registered as a company in the EU and have received special authorisation from Apple. They must also have participated in Apple's developer programme for at least two years and have a "good reputation" there. The highest hurdle - especially for smaller suppliers - is likely to be that the app must have achieved at least one million first-time installations in the App Store in the previous year.
In the "Where is?" network, Apple is expanding protection against stalking with Bluetooth trackers. In future, your iPhone will no longer just alert you to suspicious AirTags. It now also recognises and reports tracking accessories from other manufacturers.
A repair mode has been introduced in the search network. This ensures that you no longer have to deactivate "Where is?" before a repair. In the past, this was necessary as replacing components after restarting could lead to difficulties.
With iOS 17.5, the new LGBTQ+ Community wallpaper for Pride Month 2024 is available for selection.
Depending on Pride Month, Apple is adding a new widget to the Podcast app that changes colour depending on the content. If you use the Books app, you may notice the redesigned "Reading destination" icon in the navigation bar. You won't find the offline mode for the Today view of the News app or a new word game in the crossword puzzle corner in Europe, as Apple does not yet offer the app here.
If iOS 17.5 does not install automatically, you can start the update manually in the settings. To do this, go to "General" and then to "Software update".
As a primary school pupil, I used to sit in a friend's living room with many of my classmates to play the Super NES. Now I get my hands on the latest technology and test it for you. In recent years at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, now at Digitec and Galaxus.
