Four reasons why you should get into One Piece – even 25 years after its inception
by Kevin Hofer
This comes out of nowhere: Netflix wants to remake the "One Piece" anime - with Studio WIT. Fans are ecstatic because a long-awaited dream could come true for them.
It seems that Netflix has found a new cow to milk. In a teaser trailer released during Jump Festa 2024, the streaming giant announced that it would be relaunching "One Piece" - under the name "The One Piece".
Fans agree: if Netflix gets it right, the cult anime, which is now over 1000 episodes long, could also become interesting for newcomers. That is, if unnecessarily drawn-out articles and so-called fillers (gaps that don't add anything to the main story) are eliminated. So that the story is told less lengthily and with more pace - as in the manga. A prominent, similar example: "Dragon Ball Z Kai", a remake of "Dragon Ball Z".
During the event, Netflix described the remake as a modern reimagining, bringing back the East Blue saga in a nostalgic yet new way. It is therefore clear that "The One Piece" is initially dedicated to the first 61 episodes of the anime and the first 100 chapters of the manga. In it, Ruffy gathers the first members of his pirate gang to travel the dreaded Grandline with them and find the One Piece that would make him the new pirate king.
To ensure that the remake really feels "fresh" and yet "familiar", Netflix has teamed up with the legendary studio WIT. The studio is responsible for the first three seasons of "Attack on Titan", "Spy X Family" and the first season of "Vinland Saga", among others. According to industry magazine Deadline, the latest visual technologies will be used to re-stage Ruffy's adventures. However, a release date for the remake is not yet known.
Apropos: Netflix's live-action series, which was surprisingly well received by critics and fans alike, almost took on the entire Eas Blue saga. The series has already been renewed for a second season. Work is in full swing. Hopefully with a result that will better please fellow editor and "One Piece" aficionado Kevin.
So now comes the remake of the anime that has been running for 25 years. All that's missing is for Netflix to announce further spin-offs or mobile games in the coming weeks and months, similar to "Stranger Things" or "The Witcher". That would then no longer come out of nowhere.

But I'm also about curling up in an armchair with books about ugly intrigue and sinister kingkillers. Being an avid cinema-goer, I’ve been known to rave about film scores for hours on end. I’ve always wanted to say: «I am Groot.»
