"Hyper Scape": What's Ubisoft's battle royale shooter good for?

Because it's almost a matter of course, Ubiosft is now also presenting its own battle royale shooter. Numerous skills give the whole thing a new twist, but design is debatable.

The wave of Battle Royale games has long since levelled off. Ubisoft manages to squeeze in its own version before closing time. The game is called "Hyper Scape" and is currently in the test phase, to which only a limited number of players are admitted. "Hyper Scape" is due to be released as a free-to-play version at the end of the year.

Hyper Scape is set in the year 2054 in the fictional city of Neo-Arcadia. Visually, it is very reminiscent of Paris. There are currently two game modes available: Squads or Solo. Both with up to 100 players and, as always, with the aim of being the last survivor. Instead of a wall of fire or a storm, this time digitally decomposing city districts ensure a constantly shrinking playing field.

In addition to double jump and a greater focus on verticality, Hyper Scape sets itself apart from other battle royale titles with its hacks. Hacks are abilities, two of which you can equip. You can use them to make yourself invisible, raise protective walls or turn yourself into a bouncy ball to make a quick getaway. Hacks and weapons can be upgraded by picking up the same model several times.

The solo mode also differs in that a dense fog drifts through Neo-Arcadia, which makes the whole thing more of a sneaky game.

My first impression after the technical test is positive. "Hyper Scape" has a good game flow and the hacks offer interesting combination possibilities. Only the design still looks like the first draft of a game and the sound that plays when you jump is already getting on my nerves.

Hyper Scape is due to be released later this year for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
