Huawei teased its new smartwatch, the Watch 4 Pro, as part of the P60 launch event. It is making its European debut. The centrepiece of the chronometer is said to be sports and health monitoring.

The announcement of the new Huawei smartwatch, the Watch 4 Pro, took what felt like a minute. It was not given more time at the launch event, which took place in Munich in May. The manufacturer was too busy with the flagship phone P60 Pro and the foldable Mate X3. The Shenzhen-based company held a separate briefing on the smart timepiece on Wednesday for the sales launch next Monday, 13 June. The high-end chronometer, which focuses on fitness and health, follows just a few months after the Watch Ultimate outdoor device.

Big, bigger, Watch 4 Pro

The Huawei Watch 4 Pro comes in two versions. There is one model with a titanium strap and the other with a brown leather strap. So you have the choice between a simple, classic design and a more eye-catching, shiny version of the watch.

While the underside of the watches is made of ceramic, the cases are made of titanium. This includes a 1.5-inch LTPO AMOLED display (466 × 466 pixels, 310 ppi) with a diameter of 48 millimetres. Accordingly, the Watch 4 Pro weighs a hefty 65 grams - without the strap. So it's a pretty "fat piece". The maximum brightness of the display is 1000 nits. If everyday life gets rough, the always-on display is protected by sapphire glass. Water can also do little harm to the Watch 4 Pro: It is IP68 water-resistant for up to 30 minutes and to a depth of 30 metres.

Three weeks without charging - if you want

If you don't have the charging station to hand, it's not so tragic: the Watch 4 Pro can be used with all its functions for up to four and a half days. If you limit yourself to the essentials - i.e. the time, alarm clock, local music and only rudimentary health monitoring - the battery lasts up to 21 days. Huawei also promises that you can use the watch for a whole day if you charge it for just 15 minutes. A full charge takes 90 minutes. Incidentally, this is done wirelessly - otherwise it would probably be difficult with the water resistance. You have 32 GB of memory available for the aforementioned local music - although you may want to save some of this for apps.

Health at the touch of a button

The Huawei Watch 4 Pro continues the series where the Watch 3 Pro left off - with a focus on fitness functions and tools for monitoring your own health. A special new feature is the measurement of arterial stiffness. If these are particularly stiff, this favours a possible heart or vascular disease or can even indicate a circulatory disorder in the brain. This measurement function is designed to detect potential problems at an early stage.

You can also measure your skin temperature or blood oxygen level, monitor your heart rate or carry out a breathing test using the built-in microphone. Of course, you can also track your sleep.

With the new "One Minute Seven-Point Health Overview", the Watch 4 Pro can measure seven different values within one minute and display them graphically. This gives you a quick overview of your current values.

In addition to this mode, there is a range of sports and outdoor features, such as a golf or diving mode. You can also display training minutes, calories burnt or standing hours, as well as AI-controlled running training. In the event of an accident, the Watch 4 Pro also recognises falls.

Price and availability

The Huawei Watch 4 Pro will be available to pre-order from 13 June. Huawei is also offering the FreeBuds 5i for those who decide quickly. The leather version of the watch is available for 549 euros, the titanium version for 649 euros and supports LTE and WiFi. A fixed price is not yet available for Switzerland, as Huawei is not planning an official launch for the Watch 4 Pro. Should this change, we will provide the information as soon as possible.

I've been tinkering with digital networks ever since I found out how to activate both telephone channels on the ISDN card for greater bandwidth. As for the analogue variety, I've been doing that since I learned to talk. Though Winterthur is my adoptive home city, my heart still bleeds red and blue.
