Google I/O: AR glasses show subtitles for real life

Google shows AR glasses that are supposed to display subtitles for real life. Although only a simulated view through the glass is presented, the company hits a nerve with it. Who wouldn't want to understand every language?
Technologically, little to nothing is known, and in contrast to the new Pixel devices, it is still dreams of the future. Nevertheless, Google shows a preview with its latest AR glasses, with probably the most useful augmented reality application so far: subtitles for real life.
The new glasses are said to once remove language barriers from the room by translating the spoken word into the wearer's language and showing it to them on the glasses display. In the video, the AR technology translates conversations in near-real time, giving hope for a future where cross-language conversations are made possible almost instantaneously.
So far, it's unclear whether the glasses are a concept or, as implied by the video, a product in development. Google does not mention specifications for the glasses or how the AR application will work. So whether it translates directly on the device or via the cloud is unknown. Likewise, the technology company has not mentioned a launch date.
