Dropbox: large files galore

In future, Dropbox will allow you to send large files, just like the WeTransfer service. The company is offering you the chance to sign up for its beta programme. Please note that there is a waiting list!

File hosting service Dropbox is introducing a new feature: it's Dropbox Transfer, which will soon allow you to send large amounts of data, without the receiver even having a Dropbox account. To find out more, take a look at their blog!

The function is very similar to that of WeTransfer. Dropbox, on the other hand, offers you a lot more storage space and options. With a free account, WeTransfer lets you send up to 2GB of files. With Dropbox Transfer, you can send up to 100 GB. What's more, the data is stored in the cloud and the recipient receives a link to download it. As an option, the service offers controlled access through password protection as well as the ability to set a file expiry date.

WeTransfer - a cloud-based file transfer service similar to Dropbox - was brought into disrepute a few weeks ago. The reasons? A security flaw and a lot of data being sent to the wrong recipients.

Costs and other problems?

The blog does not specify whether users with a free Dropbox Basic account will also be able to benefit from these services. It would appear that Dropbox Transfer is free. Nowhere in the announcement is there any mention of a price. If so, Dropbox would have an advantage over WeTransfer, who charge you for 20GB.

However, Dropbox Transfer is only available in closed beta. So if you want to send large volumes of files, sign up here to the waiting list!

The current version remains active, of course. I'm sure you're familiar with the problem: if the owner deletes the file they've sent you, you lose access to it too. But with Dropbox Transfer, a copy of the file is automatically created and remains available for download.

Testing devices and gadgets is my thing. Some experiments lead to interesting insights, others to demolished phones. I’m hooked on series and can’t imagine life without Netflix. In summer, you’ll find me soaking up the sun by the lake or at a music festival.
