Apple Maps now also provides you with cycle routes

It's taken a long time, but now they're coming: cycle routes on Apple Maps. The map app promises detailed route descriptions and a few other features.

Those who normally use Google Maps may wonder what the news is here. Surprising as it may sound: It took Apple until the beginning of 2024 before its map app finally offered cycle routes.

Since Friday, 2 February, it has also been possible to click on Velo when selecting the mode of transport. The previous indication that cycle routes are not yet available in Switzerland is history.

In the press release, Apple emphasises the features of the map extension:

  • After entering your starting point and destination, you will receive a preview of the route. This includes information on whether the route contains busy roads or many inclines. It is possible to avoid one or even both and choose an alternative route.
  • The altitude details are displayed in real time during the journey
  • You will receive notifications to dismount and walk as soon as you approach certain intersections that you cannot cross on a safe cycle path, for example.
  • The app gives voice instructions during the journey
  • During the journey, there is an option to find interesting stops especially for cyclists. For example, public toilets, rest areas or a bike repair shop.
  • While you are travelling, you can let other people know your estimated time of arrival

If you use an Apple Watch in addition to your iPhone, you can also get the familiar haptic turn-by-turn directions - i.e. vibrations on your wrist. You can use the smartwatch's speakers to hear information about your speed or the route you have travelled.

This is what the Apple Watch tells you when you should get off your bike and push before a junction.

Apple needs to catch up

Apple has been investing noticeably more in its Maps app for several years. The competition from Google set the pace and became the standard - even on many iPhones - when it came to finding places or routes. In its Maps app, Google collates all the information it receives from the hundreds of millions of Android users: which routes they take, which restaurants, bars and shops they visit, how long they stay there, even how they rate these places, and much more. Everything that comes with consent to the privacy policy. As a result, Google Maps feels more comprehensive and complete, whether I want to avoid a traffic jam or find a well-rated restaurant in an unfamiliar city.

I will test whether Apple Maps can make up some ground with the new cycle routes, at least in this area, over the next few weeks and then report back here. During an initial spot check on my 14-kilometre commute to work, Apple Maps showed me a completely new route. Instead of my preferred route through the forest, the app guided me through residential areas. The test should be exciting.
