Hello I have several hard drives "WD Red WD100EFAX 10TB" in my Synology NAS. Now I would like to expand the volume by one hard disk using free space. Now I see that this hard drive is no longer available, but only the new WD Red Plus. As I have already read in the questions, mixing is not recommended, correct? What would be the alternative to expand the NAS? Can the "old" disks still be purchased?
Have Synology 4er Nas with 3x 10 TB WD Red for 2 years in best operation (film archive). I recently added the 4th one. I wasn't aware that it was a "new version". In any case, everything works fine. There was also no warning.
In my experience, this is not a problem. I still have 3 older WD30EFRX Red (3TB) in use, the fourth I replaced with the newer WD60EFAX (6TB). EFRX is no longer available. For me, everything runs together without any problems and the space is managed correctly by the NAS (I have QNAP). I assume it works the same way with Synology.
As I said, I will not replace all of them, but only add / expand an additional plate to the existing volume. And in the other comments there is something about SMR technology. This has now unsettled me. I don't know what kind of technology the currently installed ones (WD100EFAX) have and whether they can be combined with these new disks offered at Digitec....
I have always changed all the plates with each other and used the same type. That works well. It probably doesn't matter to Synology which product you take, as long as the capacity (10 TB for you) is the same. However, I cannot give a clear answer to your question.
