Hello I have recently had the problem that my Kingston XS2000 (4TB) SSD is suddenly no longer recognised by the computer during a data access or copy process. On my Lenovo Legion 7i (2023 model with Win11) all external SSDs (SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable 2TB) used to work without any problems. Which is of course unfavourable during a copy process. In addition, I can't possibly download all the data from the device if it keeps interrupting. So far I have tried the following: - Changed USB slot [without success] - Replaced cable [without success] - Updated driver/firmware [without success or latest version already installed] I can only resolve the error by unplugging the SSD and plugging it back in. Does anyone have any advice or has observed something similar? I would like to stick the device in but it will be difficult if I can't get the data off it. Greetings Zeneox
Wanted to say that the red version has said goodbye to me, can no longer be recognised
Answer received from Kingston. I believe I have now found the solution, although I have not yet received definitive confirmation from Kingston.
As mentioned, I wanted to be extra smart and had formatted the 4TB XS2000 with a single NTFS partition with a cluster size of 2MB. The active time of the drive in the Windows Task Manager went up to 100% after a while, after which reading and writing was no longer possible, the drive disconnected logically from Windows and was no longer recognised. Windows only recognised the drive again after it had been re-inserted several times. Kingston SSD Manager reports temperatures above 50°C.
I was able to save most of my data by plugging the XS2000 into a slow PC and using Windows Explorer to move the individual files off the XS2000, but it still kept crashing.
I have now repartitioned (a single partition) and experimented with different cluster sizes (2MB, 1MB, 512KB, 256KB, 4KB). There is no measurable difference in read/write speed with the different cluster sizes.
With a cluster size < 512KB, the SSD works UNINTERRUPTED and is always recognised immediately when Windows is plugged in.
I have now formatted with a 4KB cluster and have had NO PROBLEMS for several weeks. The temperature of the drive is also noticeably lower.
My guess is that the internal controller is overwhelmed/overloaded with clusters > 512KB.
I (and Kingston) would be interested to know how your drive is formatted.
Unfortunately no advice, but I have pretty much the same problem.
Sometimes the drive reconnects itself (without unplugging/plugging in). Usually happens when reading/writing larger files (> 1GB). Formats NTFS with 2MB clusters.
Kingston SSD Manager reports temperature 36°C (room temperature 21°C), even when the drive is only plugged in and the PC is not in use (except Windows background activities).
I have reported my problem to Kingston but have not yet received a response.
Regards.
I have 2 of these discs and the same problems. When backing up to a hard drive with Acronis, the disc can no longer be read, the backup hangs. Then I wanted to create a clone with a second, identical XS2000 (Acronis and Aomei) and on two different computers. The new disc (target) was no longer recognised after a short time, and then nothing worked at all.
That's really strange, because I suddenly got exactly the same problem. Disconnect for no reason and it got worse from time to time and now a backup is no longer possible at all. Unfortunately I have to have it replaced. PS: I can't run it through diagnostics.
Hello
If possible, I would try another (possibly older) computer. If you are unlucky, even the very latest hardware/software combination can contain errors.
There have also been mainboards that had disconnects with certain USB connections and otherwise worked perfectly.
Good luck.
