Can a 4G router like the TP-Link Archer MR600 be used with a SIM card designed for 5G networks? Or are the two cards different and backwards compatible?

The router should work with the 5G SIM card, except that it will not have the benefits of the 5G network. It will be limited to the router hardware and the speed of the 4G+ network. The 5G cards are the same size as the 4G cards.

You can also install a SIM card in a 4G router with a 5G subscription, but the maximum download from this router is only 300 Mbit/s. Alternative routers with up to 1.2 Gbit/s over 4G are also available, where you can also use a SIM card. However, they are of course much more expensive. The extra cost would be worth it, because the best routers also have much better reception.
