TP-Link Tl-Wps510u
I just wanted to connect a PC with Windows 10 to the Pocket-sized Wireless print server for wireless printing. Impossible with Windows 10. All links from the online description can NOT be opened. Neither with Fire Fox nor Chrome. The software mentioned in the manual cannot be downloaded at all. I had tried for too long. Absolutely useless manual.

Was able to use it to get my old printer working again
Device mainly intended for the Windows universe! Configuration was languid and difficult under Mac OS... not to mention that the French support sent us to an English document! Fortunately, I understand this language well and was finally able to connect the device to my wi-fi, then have it recognized by the computer...
But when transmitting a document to the connected printer, the printer gets stuck! So there is a problem in the data transmission that I will try to solve, but if I don't succeed, I will have to return it and ask for a refund!

I ordered this thing two years ago. I'm not sure anymore, but I think it was a bit cumbersome to set up. I had to assign a fixed IP for it to work and a restart is necessary from time to time. But otherwise it runs flawlessly. I use it with an Epson receipt printer.
Tried to connect to Synology
Router 1900 and 2600 -> did not work. Via internal web server with Mac and with Windows (utility and internal web server). Could never use the TP-Link device with the Synology router in Infrastructure Mode. Gave up after a few time-consuming attempts.
Not to be used because installation for laymen on Win 10 is hardly or not possible.

Installation is pure horror! Only for IT experts! Installation cost me 4 hours and another 50 CHF for sure 2 hours on the TP link hotline! Plan on a flat rate of 500 CHF for the installation. Service hotline is good, but you have to be really keen on IP addresses and hacking your own IT network. User experience is catastrophic. Then you remember why Apple is so successful. Now print from the computer works, but unfortunately no Airprint from the phone - too bad. So it's better to buy a new printer for up to CHF 500, then you save a lot of nerves.

Useless part! 30 years of IT experience and can't get it to work. Sorry. Back with it!
After 2 hours it still does not work
It's not possible to get this thing to work with a non-Windows/Apple device.

After 40 years in computing and networking, I couldn't get the thing to work as a component in my own network. I have gone through everything that the installation instructions and my experience have told me. For the effort I've put into it so far, I might as well buy a new network printer.
According to the instructions, it also seems complicated if you want to use it from different PCs.
I am happy to be taught

I am very disappointed! Whoever says that the installation programme for Mac can be found on the CD supplied,
and then delivers a mini CD, knows little about Apple.
The instructions to connect to Apple are incomplete - it won't connect! - already because with Plan B - the installation programme is missing, which is on a CD that cannot be played by Apple's normal CD drive.
I wonder if TP-Link knows this. I'll probably have to throw the device away, as it certainly does its job perfectly on Windows and is therefore not defective. But without an (old) Windows drive, I'm screwed.
It's a shame - so far I've only had positive experiences with TP-Link.
I know quite a bit about networking etc., but this shi...t is impossible to configure with Windows 10.
Printing on a network printer (LAN) from a second network (WLAN).
Works without problems.
Does not work with tablets too bad
**UPDATE**: Since probably nobody here uses Linux anyway, here is some very helpful original TP-Link information about the TL-WPS510U for Win XP, 8, 8.1 (+ 10) as well as MAC (AND Linux ;) users:
http://www.tp-link.com/en...
The most important links from this for W8(.1) + 10 users:
- How to configure the TL-WPS510U working on Infrastructure mode through its web page on Windows 8/8.1?
http://www.tp-link.com/en...
- How to connect to the WLAN-PS (Ad-hoc) network of the TL-WPS510U on Windows 8.1
http://www.tp-link.com/en...
**CAUTION**: If you change the default login password "admin", you can NOT log in anymore, at least that was the case for me, and I used very simple PW's! (no special characters or similar) This is great when you have finished configuring everything, because then only a reset will help! (or you continue to use it with these settings, but login is no longer possible) :/

After fiddling around for almost 5 hours (!), I finally got this damn thing to work. The main reason is the default Ad-hoc WLAN mode! Since this mode has been deactivated by Microsoft by default since Win8.1 (+ 10), some manual work ("netsh" command in the command line) is required to reactivate the mode!
The supplied (Windows) configuration software on a mini CD was too much to forget, either it didn't find the print server or it misconfigured it, and after a reboot the thing didn't react any more! (green LED dark) I then did it under Linux (Mint), because there the ad-hoc mode is available by default, but even here some hair had to turn grey until I could finally log on to the thing! And then it really started... a joke, honestly!

When the mini print server is running, it does its job perfectly. Configuration is not really very difficult, but requires some configuration know-how, especially if you still have some security rules in your network like MAC control and static IP. But why I don't give it more stars: The print server is only 2.4 GHz capable and does not support the extended channels (12 and 13)! A bit of a shame in this day and age.
Configuration is difficult, but once you have overcome this hurdle, the thing runs without a hitch.
Simple solution to make non-Wi-Fi enabled printers "capable".
Depending on the configuration, not all functions can be used (in my case EPSON Stylus SX together with Android app PrinterShare): scanning via WLAN not possible, ink levels not transmitted.
The installation is admittedly quite tedious, but after that the thing works without a hitch.
The installation finally worked for me with a fixed IP, security key without special characters and changing the WLAN security mode to WPA2-Personal (WPA2/WPA mixed is not supported). I also had to enter the TCP/IP port on the printer (HP Laserjet CP 1215) again (the one created by the setup wizard did not work). Instructions here: http://www.hgr-tec.de/faq...
So that this part can also get away better :-)
First verify the WPA password in the WLAN router. It should not contain any special characters. Only numbers or letters.
Installation WIN7 with QIG succeeded at the first attempt. Possibly existing protection programmes can ask for approval. Simply confirm there with "Yes" (firewall).
Using the setup wizard, the assigned IP address is immediately visible and the configuration can now be changed in detail via a web interface (e.g. admin password, etc.).
Installation with router Swisscom, Centro Grande carried out (DHCP). Also works with an old laser printer SAMSUNG ML-1450, which is not on the list, but can handle the PCL language. No problem.
In any case, I recommend it (also with regard to the price/performance ratio).
Commissioning for an ordinary consumer like me: IMPOSSIBLE! Anyone who has no idea about IP, subnet, gateway, etc. should keep their hands off.
Very cumbersome configuration
Pro
Configuration not difficult with a little concentration. Attention WPA keys only consist of letters and numbers, no '_' or '-' or even '~'.
1. peer to peer
2. set fixed IP and WPS510 in the range of the 'home network'.
3. save and reset WPS510
4. fix IP at the 'home network'.
5. peer to peer
6. set WPS510 to DHCP and save and reset (does not have to be)
7. make remaining wireless settings (save and reset)
8. set up printer
9. be happy ;-)
I can only agree that configuring under Windows 7 and a passord with '-' and special characters is very difficult if not impossible.
I would buy a printer with WLAN and save the money from the TP-Link ;-) You save yourself a lot of trouble.
- Not recommended at all for leashes.
- It took me quite a while and is still not stable.
- Instructions, quote from rogerriedi: "Catastrophic" !
- Installation via Mac: You really get grey hair...
+ very small and the USB cable supplied is practical.
ok, the configuration may be a little difficult for a layman, but the print server works without problems. There are "only" a few things to note during the configuration.
1. configure the wireless adapter of the notebook for peer-to-peer mode, i.e. IP address not equal to 192.168.0.10.
2. reset the PrintServer (in any case it does no harm) by choosing the following procedure:
-Power off
-Press and hold the reset key
-Press and hold the reset button for 7 seconds, release it and wait until the wireless LED flashes green.
-connect to the WLAN-PS network
-Start the SoftwarePrintServer_Setup_Wizard.
Then give the print server its own SSID including the corresponding security.
Recommendation: Use fixed IP addresses, no DHCP (adjust router configuration if necessary).
As soon as this data is saved in the print server, the setup programme can be terminated and the print server can be disconnected from the power supply. Then move the print server to the desired location, switch on the power, check whether the wireless LED is flashing green, install a new printer or adjust the printer port of an existing printer.
My PrintServer (2 pcs.) work under Win XP, Vista and Win7 (32 and 64). Recently also with the cablecom modem router Thomson TWG870U.
Due to the not so easy handling, I have reduced my rating by one star.
Everything is OK by default, but don't operate the device in "infrsatructure" mode. Shortly after you save the settings, the print server reboots and no longer establishes a WLAN. The light simply stays off. Only a RESET helps. I have found the same problem in various forums, but no real solution. In addition, the software supplied is a disaster. If you "do" this print server to yourself, you should only configure it via the web.
on purchase =
-100 new grey hairs
-hole in the disc in the form of a small square box
-3 years closer to a heart attack
-New purchase of a WLAN printer
-Ager over the 50.- you threw out the window
Configuration: catastrophic. For example, the instructions supplied do not mention in a single sentence that the thing has a web admin interface.... have spent hours getting annoyed with it. You don't believe me? Then google the thing and be surprised how many people also had the most massive problems getting this print server to work....
