Concerns the predecessor model 12x36 IS II S.
After a few years, the rubber coating dissolves and becomes extremely sticky. After that, the hands are as black as night. According to research on the web and at Canon, nothing has been changed in the successor. So there is a risk that this will also disintegrate over time. The optical properties and the stabiliser are great, but I still have to dispose of it now because it's no longer worth repairing.... For this reason, I have to look around for another manufacturer - what a pity!

Not recommended, on my version bought in 2013 the rubber coating became completely sticky and came off. This after normal use and 4 years. I don't know what kind of long-term tests Canon did, but it was far from enough.
My object is over 10 years old and is still the 12x36 IS II version.
Optics and IS work perfectly. However, the surface of the housing has become stickier with each passing year.
Currently so that after touching it, the hands/clothes etc. are black, not a little but full black (!).
So unfortunately no longer usable, even with rubber gloves, even if the optics and IS still work perfectly :-(
It's a pity, because you'd expect so-called brand quality from Canon!
Pictures show binoculars after "treatment" with household paper to bind the thick, sticky mass ...

The best gift for my daughter, who loves bird excursions. She is totally blown away. She managed to do it immediately. To clamp her mobile phone and take a picture. New pictures keep coming. I would love to upload the one of the super full moon 2020, but I'm not technically gifted and unfortunately can't manage it.
I would buy again.
