I have connected a TV and a receiver via the ports. With the port, you can connect any device you like (even a record player) and switch it to your Sonos speakers. https://www.sonos.com/de-de/shop/port I don't know anything about a special CD port, and I don't think it's necessary. Greetings Pete

This works, the Sonos port has DIN standardised LINE IN inputs and OUT outputs (R/L, RCA). These must be connected to the LINE Out of the network radio tuner with an RCA cable. On the Sonos control unit, you must select the corresponding channel.

I don’t think you need a preamp. I connected a record player to the Sonos Port so I could hear it to the Arc. What you should be careful of is how you would connect the Port to an old CD player. My record player is new. So it connects into the Port via a red and a blue plug. If your old CD player does not have this best to call Sonos helpline.

Hello Calvin I don't have any listening experience with Airport Express but I'm pretty sure that the bottleneck today (or even in the last 20 years) is not the electronics but mainly the material at hand (mp3, wav, flac, ogg or whatever). And in my opinion, the loudspeaker still has by far the greatest influence on the sound.
Don't tinker, buy a new TV and a Sonos port at the same time 🙄 It's worth it.
Hello Kaelin.m Unfortunately you can't get around the port. I wanted to integrate my soundbar into the Sonos network, which didn't work due to missing connections. But it should work with your TV. Unfortunately very expensive! If you're not satisfied, you can return the port for a 10% "deductible".
Hello Urs I can only say that I am very satisfied with the Sonos Port and actually everything works smoothly. However, I must say that I have not connected any device that is more than 5 years old. So it is of course very difficult to say whether the purchase will help you. Greetings Jürg

I was interested in your question, so I tried it out today. with my system and ONE sonos play 1 (first generation) it worked well and without delay.
Yes, I can do that with my home cinema system. The port is then displayed in the app like the other speakers. But I'm not sure if every receiver can also be started via Sonos. My Onkyo receiver is Sonos Ready, so now I can only select the port as the playback device, then the receiver is switched on automatically and the volume can also be controlled. I would look at this first, so that you don't always have to switch on the system manually.

Problem solved: Phono input on stereo system is apparently additionally amplified (?) on my stereo system. Audio cable connected to other input, now sound as desired.

Yes absolutely no problem. I connected my Bang & Olufsen speakers with the Port and it works perfectly. You also have EQ with the Port. Sounds great. 👍
this should work, but only if you have active speakers (speakers with built-in amplifier). With "normal" speakers, you would have to connect an additional amplifier or buy the SONOS AMP.

I uploaded my CD collection to iTunes years ago and copied the music library to an external hard disk connected to the router. Sonos can access this iTunes library without any problems and play this music.

No, with a Port you need to use the active amplifiers in your (excellent) speakers. Port is great to use with B&O speakers - since Port also has a power-out, which you use to fire up the Beolab amplifiers. I have 4 Beolab 6000 connected to two separate Sonos Ports and it works beautifully. Get one of these cables https://www.av-connection.dk/?PGr=1760 and you are all set. Or, if you can, make one yourself. There is only one issue and that is that the power-out on the Port is 12V and B&O speakers really only need 5V to switch on the amps. If you REALLY want to be on the safe side you can reduce the 12V to 5V with a 5V linear or buck regulator, which is not hard to do. Alt. have someone help you. I have not done this in my setup, but I know that I probably should... One more thing: you cannot use a Port in a 5.1 or so setting so you are stuck with 'stereo'. Disappointing, but Sonos doesn't want to make it too easy to use non-Sonos speakers, I guess. It might also be a latency issue. Anyway... Good Luck! / U

So... After all the ordered components arrived, I tested the whole thing. I can tell you one piece of good news and one piece of bad news. First the good news: The Samsung Soundbar can be controlled via the Sonos port using a digital converter (digital cinch / optical cable) and plays the selected music. Converter: Oehlbach DIGICON C/O - DIGITAL ELECTRICAL-OPTICAL AUDIO CONVERTER (Digital -> Digital) The bad news: If you have other Sonos components in use, like I do (3 x SONOS One 2nd Gen.), you will hear an audio delay on the soundbar, which unfortunately cannot be adjusted. It's about 25-50ms, which almost drives me crazy (Yep, I'm a monk). Unfortunately for me this is not an acceptable solution and the port is going back. The delay is probably coming from the converter. The digital RCA output unfortunately cannot be adjusted in any way. Only the inputs allow audio delay.
