I have the same adapter, but I don't own Airpods, but with my other countless Bluetooth headphones (Sony WH-1000XM4, Jaybird, Elevoc and many more) the adapter works without any problems - as long as you really ONLY want to listen to music. And only if you use the adapter with a computer.

You can forget about 40m. With only a thin plaster wall in between, you can reach a maximum of 5m. After that, there are already interruptions in audio transmission.
If the controller supports Bluetooth, it should actually be possible to connect it to the PC. Be careful, the old controllers need a specific adapter from Microsoft.

That would surprise me. PS4 already has BT onboard, so if it doesn't work with it, a dongle won't do you any good either. It's better to only use headsets that are explicitly labelled as PS-compatible.
