Questions about CHERRY SmartTerminal ST-1144U

Unfortunately, we could not find the model without U. We assume that they are identical products.

You do not need a CD to install the reader. Connect via USB, the driver is installed automatically and the program automatically recognises your reader.

Has a normal USB port, so needs a dongle/adapter. Otherwise works fine with MacBook Pro

We don't need to admit patients in advance (by phone). But it's not bad when people come in. But as you said, we don't really need it.
