Can you project vertically, i.e. on the ceiling, with this projector? I know it's not really designed for this but has anyone tried it before and what does it do?

Yes you could if you put it down Dumust just look that always ventilation and so are free it just gives a smaller picture but is possible... Sloping walls could also work I couldn't test it but I can imagine....
