Conclusion from the "Area DVD" test on July 9, 2014
The Pioneer VSX-529 shows us that even in the upper entry-level/lower mid-range category, performance leaps are still possible with AV receivers. We have often mentioned that there have been significant advancements in the lower price ranges in recent years – the 529 proves in the test that this is not all there is, and at least Pioneer offers even more in 2014: We particularly appreciate the good stereo sound and the noticeably improved fine dynamics. The small Pioneer handles HiRes audio files in FLAC format surprisingly well. The operation is straightforward, although the remote control has too many buttons. The solidly built and aesthetically pleasing device can be comfortably controlled with the iControl AV5 app. Drawbacks include the absence of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules, with only dongles available as optional upgrades. Additionally, the VSX-529 cannot play DSD files via USB and network in HiRes mode.
Small sound artist: The dynamic, clear, and powerful sound of the Pioneer VSX-529 is worth much more than its very fair purchase price.
