It was quite compact, had a wheelbase of 2900 mm and a payload of one and a half tonnes. Its six-cylinder carburettor engine with a displacement of 2195 cm3 developed an output of 82 hp. This vehicle was very popular with the military because of its good serviceability, reliability and high off-road capability. It was in active service for more than 50 years and was used by the Army, Air Force and Navy. In total, the Bundeswehr received 36,638 Unimog S. The standard version was a truck in whose body one could transport various loads or 8 soldiers. On its basis, a large number of special military vehicles were built: radio stations, mobile workshops, ambulances, fire engines and even special training vehicles imitating Soviet tanks.
