What is it? The Alphacool Eisblock HDX-3 water cooler provides the best cooling for your M.2 SSD. During high sustained data transfers, the performance of an M.2 SSD without cooling drops dramatically and can drop to as low as 10% of its actual performance. When transferring large amounts of data, the storage controller and the chips get very hot until a protection mechanism kicks in and the SSD's performance is severely throttled. This can be counteracted by actively cooling the SSD. After the HDX M.2 cooler for motherboards with M.2 slots and the passively cooled HDX-2 PCIe cooler, Alphacool goes one step further with the Eisblock HDX-3 and offers a water cooling system for this problem. The M.2 SSD is screwed onto the included PCIe board and the cooler is mounted on top of it. The cooler itself is made of nickel-plated copper, with a screwed acetal lid. The water flows completely over the entire SSD in the block, ensuring optimal heat transfer away from the M.2 SSD. The G1/4" connections also allow the cooler to be connected to any standard water cooling circuit. The PCIe board is plugged into a 4xPCIe slot and screwed to the case. Data can be transferred at a speed of over 3900 MB/s. This is a much higher bandwidth than most SSDs can use. Compared to conventional SATA SSDs in 2.5" format, this is an increase of 600%, as the maximum bandwidth for this connection is 640 MB/s. The plug-in card can also offer significantly better transfer rates in combination with the cooler compared to mainboard slots. This is because M.2 SSDs are often only connected with 2x PCIe on mainboards, which corresponds to a halving of the maximum data transfer rate. In addition, it is difficult to cool an M.2 SSD on a motherboard properly because the graphics card is usually mounted directly above or below it and the surrounding area heats up considerably.
