Nice, modern and fast router with smart features and settings.

I have this ASUS XT8 WiFi6 router and satellite only for just under two weeks. Therefore, a long-term experience is not yet possible. But what I find very positive so far:

-Router looks good and decent. I do not like devices
that look like oversized insects or room fragrances. ASUS has solved this well for my taste here.

-The components are very quick to set up. I have had my UPC/Cablecom device set up on bridge mode for years, so only as an internet modem. So ASUS is playing full home mesh wireless router here. Everything was up and running in 10 minutes. Everything else is optional.

-I have one ASUS device in the living room (my cable connection). The other device in the home office; so close to my main devices. Positioning the devices well makes a lot of difference. I might buy a third one near the balcony for fast internet outdoors. But that still has time until spring.

-The ASUS network is very fast. In the morning and at night up to over 850Mb. With my 600Mb UPC internet connection this is more than enough. During the day with lots of "wireless traffic" from neighbors, ASUS never drops below 500Mb. That's a multiple of my former Apple Airport Extreme router.

-Additional settings (Quality Of Service) allow, for example, to prioritize programs or devices on the network. For example movies, games, internet or home office (video, chat, telephony etc). Especially good when several people want to conduct high-quality online conferences at the same time.

-A strong and important point for me was that all ASUS components have a USB port in addition to the LAN ports. Here you can connect a printer and thus print everything wirelessly. Or a hard drive for file sharing over the internet or like me, as a TimeMachine for wireless backup for my Apple devices. In the ASUS you simply have to set how you want to use this USB port; that's it.

A clear buy recommendation so far.

Light and a lot of shadow!

Had first bought the system alone and replaced a Fritzbox 7580 with 1750 repeater with it. My goal was a Wifi-6 system. At first the disappointment was boundless. The 7580 was much faster in throughput and above all much more reliable. Here daily interruptions between receiver and base plagued for total frustration. Continuously blue flashing LED. Only a complete reboot of the system helped. Then it worked again one day. Likewise, constant disconnections to end devices. Therefore, completely useless in daily use, simply disposable. Seems to be teeming with software bugs. Extremely lousy transmission speed

After that I bought an ASUS GT-AX11000 and integrated the complete XT8 into the mesh there. And lo and behold, it works flawlessly. Has been running absolutely stable without interruption for a month now. One receiver downstairs and one in the office. Also the speed now very good, not optimal but very good. Also the receiver devices no longer get kicked out and lose connection. Absolutely stable and good. As a mesh extension it would get 5 stars, as a solo system only 1 star, hence the 3 stars. But who has large apartment or house necessarily the GT-AX11000 as a main device and the XT8 as a mesh extension. Then it is simply perfect.

    Pro

    • quickly set up
    • very good as a mesh system, not alone!

    Contra

    • Software is not mature enough
    • constantly disconnects
    • completely unreliable
    • Mesh receiver constantly loses connection
    • as a stand-alone system completely unusable!

    Hard work to add

Once you get the hubs running it is a great mesh system that performs well. But if when adding the 3rd hub, it does not work the first time, it is a really painful journey. I got the message something like "cannot add, please upgrade the firmware". But to be able to upgrade, you need to connect. For such an expensive system, there was no good help or problem-solving instructions from ASUS; very frustrating.
I did eventually figure out and solve the challenge and as I said once it is up and running, it's great

    Pro

    • High Quality
    • One you get it set up, its great

    Contra

    • Luck of the draw if it connects first time
    • Needed to read a lot of forums
    • Many comments of the difficulty to add the 3rd hub

Completely replaces a cable backbone for me

I use the two access points mainly as a replacement for a cable backbone through my entire flat. And only secondarily to improve my WiFi coverage in the flat.
The fibre connection is in the living room, and most of my IT
zoo is in a room at the other end of the flat. So I connect the fibre modem via Ethernet to one XT8, and my devices via Ethernet to the other XT8. In between, the two XT8s form their backbone over the air.

Result: I have 600-800 Mbit/s in both directions and about 2ms ping with my devices in a block of flats with well utilised frequency space.
Via WiFi (WiFi 6 devices) thanks to separate backhaul channel about 350-800 Mbit/s in the whole flat.
Thanks to the 2.5 GbE Ethernet connection on the router, depending on the constellation, several devices can even suck at the limit at the same time without the Internet access becoming a bottleneck (works for me with the Salt Fiber Box).

    Interrupts connection every few minutes

This device didn't work for me. It constantly interrupted my internet connection for up to 30 seconds at a time. I will return it.
