The Xiaomi Watch H1 measures blood pressure - and is already certified as a medical device in China and the USA. But it looks like a watch.

Xiaomi has not only unveiled a new generation of smartphones, but also two smart watches. On the one hand, the Watch S3 - a conventional smartwatch. On the other, the Watch H1, which is certified as a medical device.

The H1 measures blood pressure accurately enough

The Watch H1 has air cushions integrated into the wristband, which are inflated by a micro pump. Like a blood pressure cuff, it can be used to measure blood pressure. Xiaomi promises a maximum deviation in static pressure of 3 mm Hg (millimetre mercury column) from a professional measuring device.

This would make the watch suitable for monitoring your blood pressure throughout the day. For example, if you are already taking medication to lower your blood pressure and want to regularly check whether the setting is still correct.

Xiaomi already has approval as a medical device for China and the USA. This is a prerequisite for such a watch to be sold at all. It is not yet clear whether the Watch H1 will also come to Europe.

A similar product from Huawei has been available since the beginning of the year. However, the Huawei Watch D is only authorised in some European countries, not in Switzerland. It is designed to measure with similar precision to the Xiaomi model, but looks less like a watch.

Table-top devices are usually used to measure blood pressure in everyday life; the cuff is connected to a tube. However, there are now also wrist models that achieve the same measurement accuracy.

What can be measured is measured

The Watch H1 has a certified ECG and a built-in skin temperature sensor. The watch can also measure heart rate and blood oxygen. You can activate a fall detection function that automatically dials an emergency call.

In addition to health and fitness tracking, there are training modes for 100 sports. And the usual smartwatch features with a 1.43-inch screen, NFC chip, microphone, speaker and GPS module. The aluminium casing is water-resistant.

If the watch makes it to Europe, it will probably be priced at around 400 francs or euros.

Watch S3 with interchangeable bezel

Xiaomi is also launching another conventional smartwatch, the Watch S3. However, it has a new feature for Xiaomi: the bezel can be replaced - that is the frame around the watch face. You can then buy a strap and a bezel in the same colour. The bezel automatically activates a matching watch face.

The S3 has a 1.43-inch screen with a refresh rate of 60 hertz. The maximum brightness is 600 nits. The watch uses five satellites with two frequencies to determine its position. A special antenna design is said to improve accuracy by 50 per cent.

150 sports modes are installed, plus the usual sensors. According to the manufacturer, the battery should last up to 15 days, or five days with the always-on display switched on. Like the smartphones and the Watch H1, the Watch S3 now runs on Hyper OS, which is based on Android.

The prices for the watch in China are similar to those of its predecessors. In Europe, that would be around 200 to 250 francs or euros.

Gadgets are my passion - whether you need them for the home office, for the household, for sport and pleasure or for the smart home. Or, of course, for the big hobby next to the family, namely fishing.
