Reviews of the RTX 4080 Super: cheaper, but just as fast as the non-Super version

The RTX 4080 Super is the third of three RTX 40 refreshes releasing this month. First reviews report up to three per cent more frames per second for the graphics card.
The RTX 4080 Super offers the smallest performance leap of all Super cards in the RTX 40 series. Compared to the non-Super version, the RTX 4080, this card has five per cent more Cuda cores and a slightly higher clock rate. This isn’t reflected in the performance. On the other hand, the recommended retail price of the RTX 4080 Super at launch is significantly lower than that of the RTX 4080. Here’s a summary of what else the card can do.
Gaming
Across the 25 games in his test suite, reviewer W1zzard from Techpowerup reports just 1.5 per cent more FPS than the non-Super version. Disappointing. Wolfgang Andermahr from Computerbase also reports only one to two per cent more FPS. The GPU doesn’t use the additional computing units efficiently. At least Jarred Walton from Tom’s Hardware attests two to three per cent more performance for the card. However, even a slightly overclocked RTX 4080 can achieve this.
Overall, the RTX 4080 Super delivers 18 per cent more performance in games than the RTX 4070 Ti Super, but is still 30 per cent slower than the RTX 4090. There’s hardly any difference to the RX 7900 XTX from AMD, except when ray tracing is activated. Here, the RTX 4080 Super outperforms the AMD competition by more than 20 per cent.
Productivity
In terms of productivity, the RTX 4080 Super and the non-Super version are very similar. In W1zzard’s tests, the difference is one per cent better performance, Jarred Walton states up to three per cent – depending on the application.
Efficiency
Efficiency is along similar lines as performance. In W1zzard’s tests, the RTX 4080 Super usually requires slightly fewer watts than the RTX 4080. Jarred Walton measures more or less identical values. Wolfgang Andermahr, on the other hand, arrives at slightly higher values for the RTX 4080 Super, especially in gaming.
Overall, however, the values are similar and not significant. Like the RTX 4080, the RTX 4080 Super is an extremely efficient card.
Price
Its price seems to be the strong point of the RTX 4080 Super, as all reviewers agree. W1zzard emphasises the recommended retail price of 1000 US dollars, 200 US dollars less than the RTX 4080. Andermahr, on the other hand, believes that the price of the RTX 4080 was simply set too high and that the necessary adjustment now follows with the Super.
