Sony Ult Field 3 & 5: The small one for travelling, the big one for the living room - or the garden?
by Florian Bodoky
If the narrow smartphone sound is not enough for you when you're out and about, the three new wireless speakers from Sony could be of interest to you. And there's also a new microphone.
For the outdoor season, Sony is expanding its portfolio of wireless "Ult Power Sound" speakers. Ult stands for ultimate - with powerful bass, automatic sound optimisation and a waterproof and dustproof housing, Sony aims to deliver on its promise. The Ult Field 3, the Ult Field 5 and the Ult Tower 9 are new, and if you don't just want to listen, you can show off your karaoke skills with the Ult Mic 1, which I'll introduce to you below.
The Bluetooth range of the speakers is around 30 metres. All have a USB port where you can charge your devices.
All Ult Field speakers are portable, but differ slightly in size and features. One thing they have in common is the automatic sound field optimisation. According to Sony, it recognises noise in the sound and adjusts it so that the sound remains "clear and detailed".
My colleague Florian has tested both ultrafield speakers.
The Ult Field 3 is a compact speaker that you can wear over your shoulder using the detachable strap. It is up to you whether you use the speaker lying down or standing up. The speaker measures around 26 × 11 × 8 centimetres and weighs 1.2 kilograms.
It is available in black, grey and white.
The tweeter has a size of around 20 millimetres, the woofer measures 86 × 46 millimetres. Sony promises customised sound with the 7-band equaliser, which you operate via the app. Like the other devices in the "Ult Field" series, the Ult Field is equipped with an Ult button. At the touch of a button, you can switch the speaker to a mode with stronger bass and higher sound pressure.
Sony claims a battery life of up to 24 hours for the 5200 mAh battery. Ten minutes of charging should also allow two more hours of playback.
Like all Ult Field speakers, the Ult Field 3 is water and dust-proof in accordance with the IP67 protection protocol. In addition, it is not only suitable for pool parties, but also for beach parties: The device resists salt water. Rust shouldn't stand a chance either.
The Ult Field 5 measures 36 × 16 × 18 centimetres and is the slightly larger version of the Ult Field 3. It weighs 3.3 kilograms and can also be carried over the shoulder.
The device has a 10-band equaliser and two Ult sound modes, which you activate with the Ult button. The Deep Bass mode thumps your ears with deep bass, while Attack Bass provides powerful bass sounds. The tweeter measures 46 millimetres, the woofer 79 × 107 millimetres.
This speaker is available in black or white.
In contrast to the Ult Field 3, this speaker also creates a visual atmosphere with its RGB lighting - all around the entire device. You set the colours and effects in the app.
The Ult Field 5 is designed to provide up to 25 hours of sound on a single charge. Sony promises that ten minutes of charging will add another hundred minutes. With an IP67 protection protocol, the Ult Field 5 is also water, dust and rust resistant, but there is no mention of salt water protection in the description.
With the Ult Tower 9, you can go one step further. According to Sony, with a height of around 90 centimetres, it's a real party machine that delivers clear sound even at maximum volume. With 50-millimetre tweeters and a 320-millimetre woofer, the Ult Tower 9 offers the strongest performance of the three speakers.
The sound is reproduced all around the device, so you can position it in the centre of the room. The 360-degree RGB lighting creates the right party feeling to the rhythm of the music.
Sony ULT Tower 9
25 h, Electrical connection, Rechargeable battery operated
The scope of delivery includes an optical cable that you can connect to your TV. According to the manufacturer, the speaker then reproduces "cinema sound". Speaking of connection: you can optionally connect the splash-proof speaker to a karaoke mic or use it as a guitar amplifier.
The Ult Tower 9 has a battery life of up to 25 hours without a cable. It is equipped with castors and a handle to make it easier to move. According to Sony, ten minutes of charging time results in a further three hours of playback. The Ult Tower 9 weighs 29.6 kilograms including the battery and measures 91 × 41 × 46 centimetres.
The Ult Mic 1 is a wireless microphone set consisting of two microphones and a receiver. It is intended for use with the Ult Tower 9 and other Sony speakers not presented here. According to the description, it is suitable as a karaoke or moderation microphone.
Sony promises "enhanced noise cancellation" thanks to the design and the dampers used. It is designed to minimise noises such as loud breathing and wind. The "Duet Assist" function balances the recording volume when both microphones are in use. For example, it automatically regulates the voice of the quieter person upwards.
The manufacturer claims a battery life of 20 hours. After ten minutes of quick charging, a further two hours of runtime are possible.
The microphones are said to be so robust that they can withstand a "mic drop" undamaged. They weigh 65 grams and measure around 11.5 × 4 × 2 centimetres.
