digitec plays "Rage 2": Switch off your brain, load up and have fun

"Rage 2" is loud, colourful and wacky. With a wide range of powerful guns, spike-covered vehicles and superhuman abilities, we (once again) mix up a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
If names like "Mad Max", "Doom" and "Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon" make your eyes water, then you've come to the right place with "Rage 2". The new open-world shooter from the makers of "Just Cause" and "Doom" bears the unmistakable seal of approval of the two studios Avalanche and id Software. The combination of first-person shooter expertise and chaos simulator can be felt from the very first moment. Explosions wherever you look, powerful weapons and huge monsters that smash everything to bits and seconds later are just a pile of mud themselves. In "Rage 2", you know after a few minutes what to expect over the next few hours.
In "Rage 2", the world has once again come to an end and the remaining humans live in a "Mad Max"-like desert landscape. There are numerous motorised killing machines with which you can race across the rugged landscape. At every turn, you'll have the chance to roust bandit camps, destroy automatic turrets or wipe out mutant nests. "Rage 2" consists of a bunch of checklists that reward you with all kinds of stuff. You can use them to improve your skills, tune your car, install weapon mods, level up equipment or increase your health points. At the beginning, you will be inundated with tutorials on the game's systems and mechanics. Because the gameplay is uncompromisingly focused on fun and action, it doesn't matter if you don't have the hang of it at the beginning.

Almost as fast-paced as "Doom"
The combat system is the centrepiece of "Rage 2". It is fast, excessively bloody and effective. The weapons, from the shotgun to the legendary BFG from "Doom", pack a real punch. Items such as the boomerang or the drone are handy helpers and the ultimate ability Overdrive briefly turns you into a neon-coloured killing machine. You can sprint, glide on the ground and turn enemies into a bloody pulp with a melee attack from any movement. You can clearly feel that the "Doom" developers had a hand in this. However, the gameplay doesn't feel quite as smooth as there.
I liked both the first "Rage" and "Mad Max", despite their shortcomings. After around ten hours, it's clear that "Rage 2" also has its downsides. The story is insignificant, the special abilities are too few and some of the weapons are so powerful that there is almost no reason to change them. However, this doesn't hinder my enjoyment in any way. After 20, maximum 30 hours, however, the air should be out.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
