Canon EOS M50: New mirrorless camera

created on 27.2.2018

The new Canon EOS M50 offers 4K video, a new space-saving RAW format and high speed at an attractive price.

The Canon EOS M family is getting a new member: the EOS M50 will be available from April. It is the first camera in this system that can record 4K videos. HD videos are possible at 120 fps, which allows slow motion recordings. Compared to the previous EOS M, the M50 has a newer image processor (Digic 8) and can record RAW files in a new format (file extension CR3), which, according to the manufacturer, requires 30 to 40 per cent less space. The camera shoots continuous images at up to 10 fps, with autofocus tracking at 7.1 images per second. The touchscreen can not only be rotated up and down, but also to the side.

Other features of the M50:

  • 24 megapixels
  • Native ISO sensitivity up to 25,600
  • WLAN, Bluetooth and NFC
  • Audio input 3.5 mm
  • Positioning of the autofocus with touch & drag

The EOS M50 is priced below the EOS M5 and is also aimed more at beginners - but it is still better in many respects, simply because it is newer.

The right lens

The EOS M50 is compatible with all lenses in the EF-M line. Not that many so far. But with the affordable and fully functional adapter, you have access to the entire range of Canon lenses for SLR cameras. That's over 80 lenses from Canon alone, plus lenses from third-party manufacturers.
