Insta360 has unveiled its new action camera: Around one and a half years after the release of its predecessor, the Insta360 X4 is now available, offering 8K resolution for 360-degree videos for the first time.

The action cameras from Insta360 are known for their creative recording options, especially for outdoor activities. They are equipped with two 180-degree lenses that can be combined to create all-round shots. The new version, the Insta360 X4, has now been unveiled.

Higher resolution and more FPS

With 8K resolution and all-round video in 30 FPS, it has gone one better than its predecessor X3 with 5.7K. More resolution means more editing options, which is particularly beneficial for post-cropped videos: you can record your activities in 360 degrees and full 8K resolution and then select the section for the finished video.

This so-called reframing benefits greatly from the new 8K resolution, as the detail is displayed more sharply than with the previous 5.7K resolution of the predecessor X3.

The camera offers 5.7K videos in up to 60 FPS and 4K in up to 100 FPS for slow-motion recordings in 360-degree mode. In single lens mode, i.e. recording with only the front or rear lens, up to 4K resolution at 60 FPS is possible. The X3 could only offer 30 FPS here.

In contrast, the sensor size has remained the same at ½ inch, and the aperture of up to F1.9 has not changed either. 360-degree photos still offer up to 72 megapixels. The X4 now has internal noise reduction with the help of AI.

The display of the X4 is slightly larger and now offers a screen diagonal of 2.5 inches instead of 2.29 inches. The touchscreen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

The manufacturer demonstrates the new features of the Insta360 X4 in this video:

Image stabilisation, tracking and gesture control

Not much has changed in the creative capabilities of the Insta360 X4 compared to the X3. As with the X3, the selfie stick can be hidden so that the videos give the impression of having been taken by a drone. The image stabilisation ensures a steady image, even in hectic moments. With the Me mode, the camera always focuses on the person holding the selfie stick.

The X4 can also be controlled using gestures: for example, it can trigger when a person makes the victory sign. Voice control is also possible, but so far only in English, Japanese or Chinese.

Options such as time-lapse with up to 11K resolution, slow motion and set recording times, for example for the sunrise, provide plenty of scope for experimentation.

Better battery, but heavier weight

The X3 came with an 1800 mAh battery, which could offer around 81 minutes of runtime with 5.7 K recording in 30 FPS. The battery of the X4 now has a capacity of 2290 mAh, which, according to the manufacturer, should allow up to 135 minutes in the above-mentioned recording mode. With 8K recordings, the battery should last around 75 minutes. At 203 grams, the X4 weighs around 20 grams more than the X3 at 180 grams.

This time, the X4 comes with a removable lens cover as standard. There are no changes to the water resistance: The X4 is also waterproof to a depth of ten metres. The camera can dive even deeper with separately available protection. The X4 works at temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius.

The Insta360 X4 was released on 16 April and is already available from stock in the Swiss shop. It is not yet clear when it will be available in the Galaxus shop in the EU. It will be available without obligation for 559.99 euros.
